Surabaya

Surabaya is a city that buzzes with energy and pride. Sitting on the eastern edge of Java, it is one of Indonesia’s most important cities, with a busy harbour that has drawn traders and travellers from around the world for centuries. The streets are lively, the food is legendary, and everywhere you look there are reminders of a city with a big, bold story to tell.

That story goes way back. In 1945, Surabaya became the setting for one of the most heroic battles in Indonesia’s fight for independence, and the people here have never forgotten it. A striking comb-shaped monument stands tall in the heart of the city to honour those brave fighters. Surabaya even earned its name from ancient legend — a mighty clash between two fearsome creatures said to have taken place in its waters.

From a real submarine you can actually step inside to the longest bridge in all of Indonesia, Surabaya is endlessly surprising and absolutely worth exploring!
