Nakhon Ratchasima

Nakhon Ratchasima — or Korat, as locals lovingly call it — is a buzzing, proud city that acts as the front door to Thailand’s vast northeastern region. It sits at the heart of a wide, ancient plateau, and everywhere you look there are signs that people have called this place home for thousands of years. The atmosphere mixes everyday Thai city life with deep history and real local pride.

That pride has a face: Ya Mo, a heroic woman celebrated here like almost nowhere else on Earth. Her statue draws visitors daily, and the devotion people show her is genuinely moving. Korat’s history stretches back even further than that, though — just outside the city stands a stunning Khmer temple complex that rivals some of the most famous ancient sites in all of Southeast Asia.
