Turku

Turku

Tucked along the banks of the Aura River in southwestern Finland, Turku is a city with deep roots and a proud story. It holds the title of Finland’s oldest city, and for centuries it was the heart of the nation — the bustling capital where history was made. Even after Helsinki took over that role, Turku never lost its spirit. Today it blends its ancient past with a lively, youthful energy, partly thanks to its two busy universities.

What makes Turku truly special is how its history feels alive all around you. A mighty medieval castle stands guard by the river, a soaring cathedral has watched over the city for centuries, and beneath the streets, real medieval ruins wait to be explored. You can even step aboard historic sailing ships moored along the waterfront.

Every December, something magical happens here too. For nearly 700 years, a centuries-old Christmas tradition has been performed in the city’s oldest square — making Turku feel like a place where the past never really fades away.
