Lille

Lille is a city that belongs to everyone. Tucked into the very top of France, it sits so close to Belgium and England that for centuries people, ideas, and cultures have been flowing through it from every direction. That mix has given Lille a personality all of its own — bold, warm, and a little bit different from anywhere else in France.

Wander through the city and you’ll spot the difference straight away. The grand old buildings around the main square have a distinctly Flemish look, with ornate stone facades that feel more like Belgium than Paris. The jewel among them is the Vieille Bourse, a seventeenth-century masterpiece whose courtyard today buzzes with booksellers and chess matches. Nearby, one of France’s greatest art museums outside the capital fills a magnificent palace with paintings and ancient treasures.

Every September, Lille transforms completely when Europe’s most famous flea market takes over the entire city. Hundreds of thousands of visitors descend, the food stalls roar into life, and by the end the streets tell a deliciously messy story in mussel shells.
