Basilica di San Nicola
This magnificent Romanesque church was built to house the bones of Saint Nicholas, the real-life bishop who inspired the legend of Santa Claus.
Bari
Bari is a sun-soaked port city on the heel of Italy’s boot, where the sparkling Adriatic Sea meets centuries of incredible history. Ships have sailed from here to Greece and beyond for thousands of years, giving Bari a lively, outward-looking energy that you can still feel today. The air smells of salt and fresh bread, and the old town is a wonderful tangle of narrow whitewashed lanes where you might spot local women sitting in doorways, rolling and shaping pasta by hand just as their grandmothers did.
What makes Bari truly unique is its connection to Saint Nicholas — yes, the real bishop whose generosity and kindness inspired the Santa Claus legend we all know. His remains were brought to the city over nine hundred years ago, and the stunning church built to honour him still stands proudly today. Between that remarkable story, a mighty seafront castle, and a gorgeous promenade perfect for an evening stroll, Bari is a city that rewards every curious explorer.
