Drammen

Drammen

Drammen is a lively Norwegian city with a seriously cool history. For centuries, timber was floated down the Drammenselva river right through the heart of the city and loaded onto ships heading out to the world. That proud tradition as a trading hub helped shape Drammen into the energetic, confident place it is today. The wide river still runs through the city centre, and its bustling promenade, lined with cafés and sculptures, is the perfect place to soak up the atmosphere.

But Drammen might just be most famous for something that sounds almost too wild to be real. Buried inside a hill on the edge of the city, a road tunnel corkscrews upward through solid rock, looping around five full times before bursting out at a spectacular viewpoint high above the rooftops. It is one of the most unique driving experiences you will find anywhere on earth.

With a fascinating museum, a thriving arts scene, and a striking church dominating its main square, Drammen packs a huge amount into a relatively small city. It is well worth exploring!
