1
Rouen Cathedral (Cathédrale Notre-Dame)
This soaring Gothic masterpiece is famous for the way its stone front changes colour throughout the day — it inspired Monet to paint it more than 30 times!
Rouen
Rouen is one of France’s most historic cities, sitting on the Seine River in the heart of Normandy. Walking through its old streets feels like stepping back in time — the city is packed with timber-framed medieval buildings, grand Gothic churches, and centuries of remarkable stories. There is a real sense here that history is always just around the corner.
And what history! Rouen is where the brave young warrior Joan of Arc met her tragic end in 1431, and the striking modern church that stands at that very spot is one of the most thought-provoking places you can visit. Then there is the magnificent cathedral, whose elaborate stone front shifts from pale grey to golden pink as the light changes through the day — it captivated the painter Claude Monet so completely that he spent years returning to capture it again and again.
Rouen is a city that rewards curiosity. Look up, look around, and keep exploring — there is always something extraordinary to discover.
