Kuopio

Kuopio is a city that feels like it was made for explorers. Tucked into the heart of one of the world’s most breathtaking lake districts in central Finland, it is surrounded by a glittering patchwork of water, forests, and islands that seems to go on forever. Climb the Puijo Tower on its wooded hilltop and you will see exactly what we mean — the view stretching out in every direction is simply unforgettable.

But Kuopio is not just about stunning scenery. The city has a warm, lively character all of its own. Its bustling market square is one of the most famous in all of Finland, packed with food stalls and the chatter of locals and visitors alike. This is where you might just be brave enough to try kalakukko — fish and pork baked inside a dense rye loaf, a dish that sounds peculiar but has been winning fans here for centuries.

From world-class Finnish art to extraordinary golden Orthodox treasures and lazy afternoons on the shores of Lake Kallavesi, Kuopio packs an enormous amount of wonder into one beautiful corner of Finland.
