Oulu

Oulu

Oulu is a city that feels like two worlds in one. Sitting close to the Arctic Circle in northern Finland, it serves as a doorway to the wild, snowy landscapes of Finnish Lapland and the dancing green ribbons of the northern lights. Yet step into the city itself and you will find a lively, welcoming place full of energy and curiosity.

There is plenty to explore here. Tietomaa Science Centre pulls you into hands-on experiments and big-screen adventures, while the elegant yellow cathedral at the heart of the city quietly guards one of Finland’s oldest oil paintings. Along the waterfront, a colourful market square buzzes with vendors selling fresh fish and local berries, and nearby islands connected by bridges make the perfect place for a peaceful wander.

Oulu also has a wonderfully playful spirit. Every year it hosts a world championship where competitors travel from across the globe to perform their most passionate, theatrical solos on completely imaginary guitars. Serious fun, Finnish style.
